Coal ash wastewater spill now estimated at more than five-million gallons

(Fargo, ND) — Minnesota state investigators say a coal ash wastewater leak reported last week in Itasca County is bigger than initially estimated.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says the Tuesday leak at the Boswell Energy Center in Cohasset was about five-point-five-million gallons.

The MPCA and Minnesota Power initially estimated the leak to be around a million gallons.

The state has hired a contractor to conduct independent sampling of the impact of the spill on Blackwater Lake, Blackwater Creek and the surrounding natural habitat.
