City Commissioner John Strand says he’ll vote against convention center proposals that won’t break even financially

FARGO, N.D. – Fargo City Commissioner John Strand said he will vote against a convention center site if it’s not able to be paid for up front and if there isn’t certainty it won’t break even financially.

“I couldn’t imagine voting for something that couldn’t pencil out,” Stand said on “The Steve Hallstrom Show” on The Flag.

The City Commission approved vetting the Brewhalla and Civic Center proposals.

The convention center will be funded by a 3% lodging tax on hotel stays that voters approved in November of 2024.

“If we put it on the shoulders of the public and we make them pay down the road, that’s not what they voted for. They voted for something that the outsiders would come to town to fund and it would be financially sustainable. People are already taxed enough as it is, we don’t need to add to that burden,” Stand explained.

The city will present its findings on the Brewhalla and Civic Center convention center proposals at the City Commission meeting on May 26.
