(Fargo, ND) -- The summer horse racing season begins Friday afternoon at the North Dakota Horse Park in Fargo.

"We've increased purses which are what the horses and the trainers run for so it looks like our field size is going to be considerably better than it was last year so it should be some exciting racing," said park General Manager Hugh Alan Drexler.

Drexler has been at the park for a little more than a year.

He says his goal is to create more opportunities for longer racing schedules and a more family-friendly environment.

Gates open Friday afternoon at 3:30.
