One dead following ATV accident in Becker County

(Becker County, Minn.) — One man is dead after an ATV incident in Becker County.

According to the Becker County Sheriff’s Office, at shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday morning, the department received a report of a male who had not returned home from fishing near his residence on Big Toad Lake, which is approximately 18 miles east of Detroit Lakes. The man had left his residence Friday driving an ATV, en route to his fish house on Big Toad.

After not returning home after several hours, along with unanswered phone calls and messages, the missing man’s wife contacted the man’s brother for assistance in locating her husband.

The brother located a crack in the ice with open water, at which time the wife called the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and emergency personnel from both the Wolf Lake and Detroit Lakes fire departments responded with personal flotation gear. The Sheriff’s Department also responded with an air boat.

At approximately 3:22 a.m., personnel on the air boat located the victim, along with the ATV, which was upside down, in approximately four to five feet of water.

Authorities have identified the victim as 67-year-old Jerry Buhr of Osage, Minn.

The incident remains under investigation.
