"This will go nowhere" : Fargo Mayor speaks to ceasefire protestors after multiple demonstrations at city hall

(Fargo, ND) -- Fargo city leadership says they will likely not be considering a resolution that would call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney spoke on the Steve Hallstrom Show about two times since the beginning of 2024 when protesters gathered inside city hall and urged for leaders to call for ceasefire. Mayor Mahoney sat down and had a conversation with the speakers, saying there is not much the city can do.

"We tried to explain to the people, the activists that came forward to us, that it is a national policy issue. I'll give them the numbers of our Senators or Representatives and (the lawmakers) would be happy to talk to them," said Mahoney. "I had to sit down and have a frank conversation with some of the activists, and say this will go nowhere because we don't get into these comments. There is two sides to every story, and its a volatile subject throughout the country. "

"I would love to see peace as well," continued Mahoney, "I don't think the city of Fargo is going to intervene in that outcome. That (decision) is going to be made by our national leaders."

On Monday, speakers urged the city commission to pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, citing concerns of genocide. A similar event occurred in January, when speakers again called for leadership to pass a ceasefire resolution.
