Fargo homebuilder discusses impacts of higher interest rates and inflation

(Fargo, ND) -- A local home builder is talking about the challenges of running his business while dealing with the effects of inflation and higher interest rates.

One example he cites is the cost of particle board.

"When covid was really ramped up, lumber was high. Those were like in the upper 30s (dollars) a sheet and prior to that it was 11 dollars a sheet. Now we are back into the teens. It's less than it was but it's still higher," said Darrick Guthmiller, President of Kochmann Brothers Homes.

Even though Guthmiller says his company currently has "quite a few" projects "in the hopper" for the summer building season, he also says business has slowed, at least in part because of relatively higher interest rates compared to two to three years ago.

Guthmiller appeared on The Flag's Steve Hallstrom Show.
