(Fargo, ND) -- A candidate for the Fargo School Board says when the body voted to not stand for the pledge of allegiance, he wanted to get involved.

Paul Mohror spoke with the Flag's What's on your Mind about his campaign priorities. He talked about the increased need for transparency on the board, including responding to community concerns and questions. He also focused on his impetus for starting the campaign, when the school board voted to suspend a reading of the pledge of allegiance at meetings. It was a decision drew local, state, and national attention. Eventually, the board reversed course and renewed a mandatory pledge, but did so after the intense push back, threats, and racial statements were made against them.

"Not doing the Pledge of Allegiance is one of those things, it's like, well wait a minute, we are in America. You should stand when a flag goes by in a parade. This is not Minneapolis, this is not New York, this is Fargo, North Dakota," said Mohror.

Mohror said the school board should ideally become the voice for parents, educators, and students. He believes the current board has moved away from that motto, and wants to renew that promise.
