(Wellington) -- New Zealand is taking more than three tons of cocaine out of circulation.

New Zealand's Police Commissioner announced on Wednesday that the country's police, customs service, and defense force recovered three-and-a-half tons of cocaine floating in a remote area of the Pacific Ocean.

New Zealand authorities said smugglers from South America left more than 80 bales of the drug at a floating drop point.

New Zealand said the drugs were headed to Australia.
