(Washington, DC)  --  A U.S. congressman is calling on Texas officials to ignore a Supreme Court ruling that allows the federal government to remove razor wire from the southern border.

Earlier this month, the Texas National Guard strung razor wire along parts of the Rio Grande to keep migrants from crossing into the U.S. On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled the U.S. government can take down the wire.

On Tuesday, Representative Chip Roy (R-Texas) of Texas said state officials "have a duty under the Constitution" to protect and defend citizens even if the Supreme Court appears to be leaning in a different direction. Texas Governor Gregg Abbot also confirmed a statement from the state's Department of Public Safety, who said they will continue to deter illegal crossings by "utilizing effective border security measures - reinforced concertina wire & anti-climb barriers along the Rio Grande."
