(St. Paul, MN) -- A federal grand jury is investigating the 2018 death of a Beltrami County jail inmate.

Investigators believe Hardel Sherrell suffered for several days before dying because his jailers and care providers believed he was faking illness. The state medical board suspended Dr. Todd Leonard's license Tuesday, calling his actions toward Sherrell "egregious."

An Administrative Law Judge recommended discipline for Leonard and called for an investigation of "all who callously disregarded their duty to this man." Sherrell's mother Del She Perry says Leaonard's suspension is a "small victory" but that much more needs to be done.
