(St. Paul, MN) -- Governor Tim Walz is calling for lawmakers to unify as they move forward during the legislative session.

Walz issued a challenge to legislators during his State of the State address Sunday night, asking them to use the state's historic budget surplus to help Minnesotans hardest hit by the pandemic. The governor gave the address from the Minnesota House chamber for the first time since the pandemic began. Walz's speech was the final one of his first term.

Meanwhile, Minnesota Democrats and GOP lawmakers are set to debate contrasting public safety plans. A plan proposed by House DFLers focuses on community-centered solutions, with three-quarters of the package aimed at community groups and hiring more police officers. The Senate GOP plans to pass legislation focused on tougher penalties.

The packages are the top legislative priority for both parties, which will be working to come to a compromise on the divisive and controversial issue.
