(Williston, ND) -- Shots were fired and a suspect is in custody after a chase early Friday morning.

The Williston Police Department says the encounter began at approximately 12:22 a.m. when they attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the 2600 block of University Drive. Authorities say the suspect vehicle fled, with law enforcement following suit and later joined by surrounding agencies. Eventually the Williston PD called off the pursuit, but Williams County Sheriff's Office continued the chase, deploying spike strips and puncturing the tires of the suspect vehicle.

The chase ended in the 2000 block of E Dakota Parkway, when authorities say the suspect left the vehicle and fired rounds at law enforcement and entered a nearby apartment building. SWAT was called to the scene and successfully arrested the suspect.

As of this publication, there is still a heavy law enforcement presence in the area of the 2000 block of E Dakota Parkway. No injuries are reported from the incident, and the North Dakota BCI is investigating the incident.

The identity of the suspect is not known to the public at this time
