(Waubun, MN) -- A mechanical room fire is causing Waubun Public Schools to cancel classes for some students today.

Waubun Public Schools says a mechanical room fire started on Sunday afternoon and was quickly extinguished, but caused smoke to spread throughout the building. As a result, class is canceled for Pre-k-3rd grade students. Grades 4-12 will have a regularly scheduled class day.

"While we understand this may be a major inconvenience for many, please know that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority," said a statement from Waubun Public Schools on social media.

Several departments responded to the blaze. The district says they will continue to update parents.
