U Mary cyber expert discusses whether breach could have played role in Baltimore bridge crash

(Fargo, ND) -- A cybersecurity expert from the University of Mary was asked about the possibility that a cyber breach played a role in the crash of that cargo ship into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

"I think of three things. Number one, you have to have connectivity to it. So, how would somebody get connectivity to a ship. Would it be through Satellite? Would it be through some type of physical connectivity like that? Number two, they'd have to have what we call the protocol, and number three, they'd have to have the service to change those things," said Matt Frohlich, the university's Director of Cybersecurity Administration Program.

Forlich said newer ships that are computerized, similar to newer cars, can be hacked.

So far, federal investigators have not given any indication that hacking played a role in the Baltimore incident.

Frolich appeared on The Flag's "What's on Your Mind".
