Governor Walz urges Minnesota legislators to address copper wire thefts

(St. Paul, MN)  --  Governor Tim Walz and St. Paul leaders are urging state legislators to address the increasing problem of copper wire theft.

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter gave an example of how copper wire was stolen from a street light only a day before the copper wire was replaced.

Governor Walz is recommending restricting the sale of the item.

Currently, there are two proposed bills in the Minnesota Legislature.

One requires every dealer to create a permanent record of every copper wire sale.

The other measure requires every seller to have a license that must be renewed each year.
