(Detroit Lakes, MN) -- The stepmother of embattled DFL state Senator Nicole Mitchell is reacting after her stepdaughter allegedly broke into her house last month.

Senator Mitchell was reportedly arrested in the basement of 74-year-old Carol Mitchell's home, where the lawmaker initially said she was retrieving her father's ashes, then later said she was merely checking on a loved one with Alzheimer's disease.

Carol Mitchell says she had been recently diagnosed but hadn't told the senator, and described seeing the younger woman "dressed like a burglar" at the foot of her bed.

Police reports show Nicole Mitchell was dressed all in black when she was arrested, and had a flashlight with a black sock pulled over it.
