Fargo Police make arrest in multiple vehicle theft cases, robbery

Throughout the month of December 2020, Fargo Police Officers investigated multiple vehicle thefts where the vehicle was left unlocked with the keys in it.

After a thorough investigation, involving patrol officers, detectives and a collaboration with area law enforcement, Lucas Ronald Kulberg, 24 years old with no permanent address, was arrested on Jan. 2, 2021 for three counts of motor vehicle theft and a robbery involving a threat of a weapon. Kulberg committed this robbery while using a vehicle he stole that was left unlocked with the key in it.

Additionally, Investigations worked with North Dakota Probation and Parole to get Kulberg’s probation revoked, ensuring his continued detention keeping the community free from being victimized by Kulberg.

Detectives will continue to follow up on additional cases to determine whether or not Kulberg was involved in other crimes.

Unlocked motor vehicles, with the keys left in them, create a crime of opportunity for willing thieves. These thieves then use the stolen vehicle to commit other crimes in our community, victimizing additional people and businesses. In addition, they often flee from law enforcement when encountered in these vehicles, many times causing property damage, creating additional victims.

The Fargo Police Department is asking the community to ensure they are not leaving vehicles unlocked with the keys in it, and consider investing in an autostart program or a second set of keys.
