West Fargo Fire, American Red Cross installing free smoke alarms

The West Fargo Fire Department is partnering with the American Red Cross for a Sound the Alarm. Save a Life. event where free smoke alarm installations will be offered in the Meadow Ridge development of West Fargo.

Anyone who lives in a permanent, single-family dwelling from Main Avenue to 7th Avenue East and 45th Street to 17th Street East can make a request to get their current smoke alarms checked and new smoke alarms installed. The homes in this area will also receive a notification in the mail from the West Fargo Fire Department.

Smoke alarm installations will take place November 3rd – November 16th and here’s how it works:

1. Residents can submit a request anytime at getasmokealarm.org.
2. The Red Cross will contact residents to set up an appointment.
3. Red Cross volunteers and West Fargo firefighters will install free smoke alarms and help residents create home fire escape plans.

The Sound the Alarm. Save a Life. smoke alarm installation event is part of the American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, launched in 2014 to help reduce the number of injuries and deaths caused by home fires. In the last five years, the Red Cross and its partners have:

• Installed more than 18,000 free smoke alarms in the Dakotas Region.
• Helped create more than 5,000 escape plans.
• Reached more than 5,000 youth with fire safety and preparedness information.
• Saved at least 642 lives across the country, including 2 in the Dakotas Region.

The Red Cross partners with fire departments to install smoke alarms all year-round. Although this event focuses on the Meadow Ridge development of West Fargo, anyone can make a request at getasmokealarm.org to receive free smoke alarms throughout the year. All services are completely free of charge through the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign.
