Federal OCR compliance review underway at Fargo Public Schools

The US Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights confirms to WZFG News that an investigation at Fargo Public Schools is underway.

The investigation has to do with restraint and seclusion, according to department officials.

Jim Bradshaw, a spokesperson with the US Department of Education, tells WZFG News that it is policy that OCR does not discuss the details of its pending investigations.

When contacted by WZFG News, Fargo Public Schools spokesperson AnnMarie Campbell also confirmed that a ‘compliance review’ is underway. She says the district was notified of the compliance review in February 2019.

A compliance review focuses on the District as a whole.

It will be a systemic review to ensure FPS is consistently applying policy and procedures. OCR has indicated this review will take about a year to complete, with a possible end outcome of required trainings for the district, Campbell says.

In a statement, provided to WZFG News, Superintendent Rupak Gandhi says, “As part of our continuous improvement process, Fargo Public Schools welcomes the opportunity for the compliance review from OCR.”
