I-29, I-94 in Fargo to receive updated video detection systems

Starting this week, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) contractors will begin installation of equipment for updated video detection systems on the majority of interstate signal systems in Fargo. This includes cameras and cabinet equipment.

To allow crews enough room to safely place these, there will be temporary lane reductions surrounding the signal area. Lane closures will not be up during peak travel times, including between the hours of 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 – 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Beginning Wednesday, August 5, crews will begin the first section of project work at the intersection of I-29 and 19th Avenue North. Motorists should plan for lane closures along 19th Avenue North near the signal systems.

Intersections slated to have intermittent lane closures over the next few months include:

• I-29 west and east off-ramps onto 12th Avenue North
• I-29 west and east off-ramps onto Main Avenue
• I-29 west off-ramps onto 38th Street South
• I-29 east off-ramp onto 13th Avenue South
• I-29 west and east off-ramps onto 52nd Avenue South
• I-94 north and south off-ramps onto 25th Street South
• I-94 north and south off-ramps onto 45th Street South
• I-94 south off-ramp onto Veterans Boulevard
• I-94 north off-ramps onto 9th Street East

The work time per signal location should be about three days. Times may vary depending on location and work required. The entire safety project should be complete by early November. 

This project work is being done to build a seamless signal system in conjunction with the City of Fargo. Drivers should use caution in the work areas while changing lanes for the lane closures. Motorists are reminded that if they come upon a signal in flash, remember that flashing red means to stop and proceed as if at an all way stop sign, flashing yellow is to proceed with caution.

The NDDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones stating, “road closed.”
