(Fargo, ND) -- It may not have been the answer some parents and members of the school district were looking for, but the mask mandate in Fargo public schools is being tapered down just a bit.

The school board at their Tuesday evening meeting voting to now only 'strongly recommend' the face coverings at after-school events like sports and extra curricular activities. The board did however keep the mandate in effect for in-class instruction, citing that the data just isn't available yet to remove that mandate for all students in the district.

Members of the board did acknowledge, however, that with children ages 5-11 now being able to get the COVID-19 vaccine, a lifting of the mask mandate could be on the horizon in the future. Fargo is still one of only two districts in the entire state of North Dakota mandating masks in schools, joining Grand Forks Public Schools.
