(Washington, D.C.) --  World leaders are reacting to the death of former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who died Tuesday at age 91.

President Biden praised Gorbachev, and said the last leader of the former Soviet Union he helped create "a safer world and greater freedom for millions."

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Gorbachev's "tireless commitment to opening up Soviet society remains an example to us all."

French President Emmanuel Macron called him "a man of peace" who "changed our common history."

Gorbachev oversaw the end of the Cold War with the United States, and the iconic moment of the Berlin wall being torn down.
