(Doha)  --  The Palestinian militant group Hamas is proposing a ceasefire and an eventual end to its war with Israel.

The plan, a response to a proposal put together by Qatari and Egyptian mediators, would see three phases lasting 45 days each. It calls for remaining Israeli hostages captured in the October 7th attacks on Israel to be returned in exchange for prisoners, followed by an exchange of bodies and remains. The truce would also let in more aid to Gaza where there is widespread hunger and lack of medicine.

At least 27,500 Palestinians have been killed since the October 7th attacks, which left some 1,200 people dead.
