(Bismarck, ND) -- The holidays are bringing a gift from the State Game and Fish Department.

A free ice fishing weekend is on tap to ring in the New Year. Residents can fish without a license December 30th and 31st. Officials say it's a good time to try ice fishing for the first time. However, experts also caution residents who are attempting to fish on the ice to be careful on lakes that have not fully frozen over. Recommendations for generally safe ice depths can be found below

The Game and Fish Department does have several fish house rules which can be found on their website. You can learn more by clicking here.
