(West Fargo, ND) -- Local First Responders are warning residents of ice buildup that could impact homes if not treated properly.

The West Fargo Fire Department says buildup on gas meters and exhaust vents can present safety hazards if not treated properly. The buildup could lead to gas leaks or other appliance issues that could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Authorities ask residents to clear a three-foot area around vents and intake tubes, and to not use shovels or hammers to remove the built-up ice and snow.

“Carefully remove ice and snow from gas meters and vents using a broom, your hands or a soft brushed tool,” said West Fargo Fire Marshal Dell Sprecher. “After any winter weather, it is important to inspect all meters and vents to ensure they remain clear of both snow and ice.”
