(Belcourt, ND) -- A Belcourt man is facing life in prison after he was sentenced yesterday in a child-sex case.

Court officials in Fargo say 35-year-old Robert Houle was sentenced for abusive sexual contact with a child under the age of 12 on Friday, this is after he pleaded guilty to the charge in July. Investigators reportedly determined that Houle had sexually abused a Native American child on multiple occasions while the victim was six to 11 years old.

Houle was sentenced to life in prison.

“This is a strong sentence that protects children,” Schneider said. “It is also a real credit to our law enforcement partners and career prosecutors who worked hard to ensure this individual faced justice. The United States Attorney’s Office will continue to play its part in keeping kids safe by vigorously prosecuting crimes against children.”

Court officials say the incidents of abuse had taken place on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation.
