(St. Paul, MN)  --  Congenital syphilis cases are on the rise in Minnesota.

The state's Health Department says 29 newborns were infected with the disease last year, up from 20 in 2022. That is more cases than at any time in the past four decades in Minnesota. The disease occurs when a woman who is pregnant passes a syphilis infection on to the fetus. Additionally, it can spread through person-to-person or sexual contact.
