Third suspect charged in Frazee, Minn. home invasion murder

BECKER COUNTY, Minn. (Valley News Live) – A third suspect has been charged as an adult in connection with the deadly December 2025 home invasion in Frazee that killed 19-year-old Bryson May.

Cash Christofer Mathieu, 17, of Perham, faces two felony counts: first-degree aggravated robbery and aiding an offender to avoid arrest. He appeared in Becker County District Court on May 4, 2026, where he waived juvenile certification proceedings and acknowledged an adult court file would be created. He is being held at the Becker County Jail pending further proceedings.

Background

According to court documents, Becker County deputies responded to a report of shots fired at 701 Ash Ave. W. in Frazee just after 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 20, 2025. Deputies arrived to find May with gunshot wounds to his chest and head. He was transported to Essentia St. Mary’s, where he later died. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators say Arthur Campbell, 21, of Frazee, and Kayne Mackner, 16, of Detroit Lakes, forced their way into the home armed with handguns, demanding money and property. Witnesses told investigators the group drove from Hawley to Frazee to collect a debt, but went to the wrong house.

Mathieu’s Alleged Role

Court documents say Mathieu drove the group to Frazee and remained in the vehicle while Campbell and Mackner entered the home. After hearing gunshots, Mathieu said he was preparing to leave when Campbell and Mackner ran back to the vehicle shouting “Go, go, go!”

Otter Tail County deputies stopped the vehicle, a dark-colored SUV, on U.S. Highway 10 near Perham approximately 12 minutes after the initial 911 call. All four occupants were detained.

After his arrest, Mathieu told investigators that two of the vehicle’s occupants had guns, and that his DNA “might” be on one of the weapons because he had been shooting it about a week before the incident.

A jail call recorded the day after the shooting captured Campbell saying, “It’s nobody’s fault but mine, ok, and maybe a little bit of Cash’s.” A male caller responded, “Cash was just being a puppeteer, pulling the strings.”

Investigators also recovered two 9mm handguns from a nearby mailbox. Court documents say Mathieu stopped at a residence after leaving the scene and watched Campbell and Mackner place the weapons inside.

Other Defendants

Mackner accepted a plea deal in February 2026 and agreed to be charged as an adult on second-degree murder charges. The Becker County Attorney’s Office is recommending a maximum 35-year sentence. Campbell faces charges of second-degree murder, second-degree assault, and soliciting a juvenile to commit a criminal act. Both are due back in court May 19, 2026.

May’s mother, Emmy Johnson, witnessed the shooting. She has publicly called for maximum sentences for all those involved.

“We’re prepared to fight for him either way. No matter how long it takes, we want him to get the justice he deserves,” Johnson said.

Mathieu’s next court date is scheduled for June 1.
