Crack The Code 2.0 initiative gets $36 million in federal funding to possibly double oil recovery in N.D.

BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota Senator John Hoeven has announced $36 million in funding from the United States Department of Energy for the Crack The Code 2.0 initiative.

“We are taking a major step forward in efforts to partner North Dakota’s oil and coal producers and provide a more solid foundation for the future of both of these essential industries,” Hoeven said. “[Enhanced oil recovery] has the potential to double both the oil recovery rate in formations like the Bakken and the life of our coal-fired power plants.”

Phase one of the project has $157 million in total funding.

Crack the Code 2.0 is also supported by a policy Hoeven worked to secure in the One Big Beautiful Act to properly align the 45Q tax credit to incentivize the use of carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery.
